Semi-Pro (2008)

Jackie Moon, the owner-coach-player of the American Basketball Association’s Flint Michigan Tropics, rallies his teammates to make their NBA dreams come true. (IMDb)
Flagrant female objectification aside, the film’s outrageous humour–amplified by the flamboyant 70s setting (afros, funk, and short shorts FTW)–is largely a slam dunk: Led by focused-on-everything-but-the-game Jackie Moon (see his choreography practice), laughs are had both on (the odd-pair commentators are great) and off the court (see the infectious poker joke session), with only Monix’s pointless sub-plot putting a damper on things. The typical sports-narrative is also done surprisingly well.
7/10 (Good)
