5 years of Joel Watches Movies

Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of my very first review posted on Joel Watches Movies! Time flies. Notable movies in my local theatres around this time 5 years ago included Ex Machina, The Age of Adaline, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now there are none and countless flicks we were all looking forward to watching have had their release dates postponed. Fortunately we’ve got computers and TVs and internet and countless ways of watching movies from the comfort of our own homes (VHS anyone?? No? Just me?)

5 years ago I was married, childless, and out of school. Today I’m no longer married (don’t worry, we’re on good terms), have a 4 year old heading to kindergarten in the fall, and am just finishing up another round of school. Some things change and some don’t but even the things that don’t actually do. Everything’s constantly growing or dying or adjusting and this blog is no different. I’m proud to say this blog is still the same as it was 5 years ago in that it exists and it’s active, but of course it’s grown and changed plenty over the past half-decade. Here are a few of the changes that have occurred:

Hmm. Okay, maybe this blog hasn’t changed that much over 5 years; I’m a guy who likes his consistency, what can I say. But that’s not to say I don’t have any goals I want to accomplish for the next 5 years:

1. Reach 1000 reviews.
I mean, this should be easy right? I only need to watch a movie a week to be able to finish this in the next five years, so maybe this is a bit of a conservative goal but you never know what life will throw at you so I’ll stick with this for now! My main movie-watching buddy my brother Adriel (check out his reviews at media meum.) and I plan to reach this goal at the same time and watch our 1000th movie together, so we’re in need of suggestions! Any classic films we should set aside for this review? Any movies in pre-production that we should try and aim to have as our 1000th?

2. Write more lists and opinion pieces.
I like to think I put some of my personality into my mini-reviews (hoping there are people out there who appreciate the dumb puns and jokes that I throw into a review whenever I can) but longer features like lists or opinion pieces I think would be nice to inject a little more flavour into the blog.

3. Watch and review more films created by and/or starring women and/or people of colour and/or non-English as first language speakers.
I haven’t looked at the exact numbers but I’m sure it’s disgustingly high the percentage of films that I’ve reviewed that have been directed/written by and star exclusively white and primarily English-speaking males. There are so many other voices in cinema that need to be listened to and promoted and I need to do my part here.

4. Start a Letterboxd account. How many of you are already on there? Gimme your usernames so I can follow you! (Also come be my “kumpel” on Criticker, my current social movie rating and review site and the reason/inspiration for the 500 characters or less format of my reviews!)

5. Watch and review a movie that starts with X. Huh. Any movie recommendations for me here? X-Men I guess?

Thanks to all of you past and present who’ve let me know they appreciate the content I put out, whether that be through a follow, a comment, a like, or just good vibes. I can feel ’em. 😉 Much love! Here’s to the next five years ❤
