Runaway Bride (1999)
I just loved the mystery of this opening sequence–yes, there’s a runaway bride, just like the title says. But where did she come from? Why is she running away? How did she get a horse? This note of intrigue, combined with the unique aesthetic beauty of this fiercely determined bride galloping on a horse through sun-drenched fields and forests while U2’s soul-searching anthem “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” played made for quite the captivating opening (which the film to follow never quite lived up to, unfortunately).
Philadelphia (1993)
Underneath the melancholy synth and emotive vocals of Bruce Springsteen is a lovely montage of diverse shots of the city of Philadelphia, with a unique handwritten white script laid over top for the credits. It’s a mellow and uniquely artistic opening sequence that eases you into this emotional drama.
