Predator (1987)
IMDb rating: 7.8
My rating: 6.5 (review here)
Rating difference: 1.3
If the whole movie had been Arnold alone in his battle of wits with the Predator, I would have rated this movie higher. Unfortunately, the first half or so is riddled with eye-rolling dialogue and features one particularly brain-numbing shoot-em-up. Good popcorn flick, but nothing more.
The Searchers (1956)
IMDb rating: 8.0
My rating: 7 (review here)
Rating difference: 1.0
Another classic film I don’t despise by any means-it’s an engaging western, to be sure–but don’t necessarily think holds up as a masterpiece today. Wayne’s performance–while charming in a cozy, old movie kind of way–is a little wooden, and his character’s cocky machismo gets a bit much at times.
Jaws (1975)
IMDb rating: 8.0
My rating: 7 (review here)
Rating difference: 1.0
I get it, this film was a game-changer. The first “summer blockbuster”. Steven Spielberg’s coming out party. And it’s still a good film, don’t get me wrong! The way it built the tension and created feelings of horror without revealing its titular monster until the end–and even then, only for the briefest of moments–should definitely be lauded. But if it came out today, would we still call it great? I’m doubtful. It’s a little too slow and weighted down by unnecessary dialogue to remain a truly great thriller today.
